Cecile Pryor Coleman’s “A Pursuit of Freedom” explores the desire to find her personal and cultural identity through the past and present using the artistic process. Pryor-Coleman uses acrylics, charcoal, oil pencils, pastels, and mix mediums with recycled and natural textiles. Her art reflects the past and the present and shares a part of a brokenness and healing as she give her viewers an opportunity to navigate through the lenses of life.
“When I relate to my earliest memories, I did not choose art, it chose me. I didn’t set out to be an artist that focuses on environmental issue or to create artwork relating to social justices, but as my portfolio developed and people started to assess my work, the descriptions started to transform and I noticed a pattern I hadn't anticipated but now embrace it.”
