Join us for our annual lecture series. February will feature Terry Brock, Assistant Director of Archaeology, James Madison’s Montpelier.

Archaeology is one of the critical tools used to understand the lives of enslaved African Americans in Virginia. This talk will discuss how the intersection of archaeology and descendant community engagement were used to understand the past and present at James Madison’s Montpelier.

Assistant Director of Archaeology Terry Brock will discuss ways that archaeology uncovered the homes and work places of African American enslaved by James Madison, and how the discoveries reveal the different ways that these spaces were redefined by enslaved African Americans. He will also discuss how working with the community, in partnership, has led to rethinking the house museum landscape.
