From Enslavement to Empowerment: Reflections from St. Emma Military Academy & St. Francis de Sales High School
Sunday, February 18, 12-4P
Virginia Museum of History & Culture

Discover the forgotten history and untold stories of how the historic Belmead Plantation on the James River in Powhatan, Virginia transitioned into two schools of higher learning for Native and African American young men and women.

Enjoy a historical presentation about the Belmead property and the personal memoirs and storytelling session from former St. Emma Military Academy Cadets and Young Ladies from St. Francis de Sales High School - two institutions that were founded in the late 1800's by the heiresses to the Drexel fortune that graduated over 15,000 African American students over a 77 year span - on the very property that was once a plantation owned by a Civil War General.

The program will include a fascinating panel discussion with alumni from both schools that will also involve audience participation.

This program is being held in February in honor of Black History Month.

A light reception will follow the program.
