Leadbelly
Friday, February 17, 6:30-9P
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA)
Huddie William Ledbetter (1889–1947), the singer known as Lead Belly, mastered the 12-string guitar and a slew of other instruments and wrote or recorded many iconic folk/blues standards such as “Rock Island Line,” “Midnight Special,” and “Goodnight Irene.” He led a rough-and-tumble life that makes for an entertaining and educational movie directed by Gordon Parks with an engaging portrayal by actor Roger E. Mosley. (1976; 127 min; in color, Rated PG).
This event is in tribute to VMFA’s current exhibition Storied Strings: The Guitar in American Art. The exhibition's curator, Dr. Leo Mazow, VMFA's Louise B. and J. Harwood Cochrane Curator of American Art, will speak.
