Featuring ten works by contemporary Native American artists, “Words Matter” underscores the richness and diversity of the contemporary Indigenous experience as told through the medium of printmaking. The works on display—nine prints and one printed-paper woven basket—combine word and image to chronicle the tragedies of history and to supply messages of hope, humor, survival, and prosperity. “Words Matter” is curated by Dr. Johanna Minich, VMFA’s Assistant Curator of Native American Art, and is accompanied by a wonderful companion exhibition in the Freeman Library that highlights Indigenous artists who work in the fields of comic books and graphic novels, as well as ceramic arts.
