National Black Business Month | Ervin Johnson

Tell us a little about yourself.
I was born & raised in Richmond, Va. My convenience store, OneWay Market, was created with the idea of bringing a new experience to my city. I offer a ton of different snacks from all over the world, including chips, candy & drinks. I also own OneWay Cream & Goodies, which is my ice cream shop across the street. I serve decadent ice cream & milkshakes.

How do you think the increased visibility of black entrepreneurs can inspire future generations?
As of 2020, I've never seen so many new & upcoming black businesses flourishing. Although having a 9-5 is great security, I think that it's inspiring for the youth, especially young people of color, to be able to physically see that the sky is the limit for them. You never have to settle & you can always turn your dreams into reality no matter how much adversity we face. I also think it's important to teach them about community as well, building your block & creating generational wealth. If I can do it, they can too.

What are some unique challenges you've faced as a black entrepreneur, and how have you overcome them?
Starting my business in the middle of the pandemic was my biggest challenge thus far. Since then, the ride has been pretty smooth. I overcame every other bump in the road with the faith I have in myself & my brand.

BLK RVA is all about supporting the thriving Black businesses and culture in the Richmond region and encouraging others to do the same. Can you share a few of your favorite local, Black-owned businesses?
